My training in the Marine Corp has given me the confidence, discipline, and leadership skills to achieve any goal I set for myself. Learn the importance of teamwork and trust the members of your unit. It’s an invaluable lesson that I apply today. For the past five years, I have worked with Black Girls Smile and the Red Shoe Society and volunteered with Volunteer Gwinnett to help my communities. Additionally, I was the first freshman in the Pre-Dental Society at Georgia Gwinnett College. I have also been president for two years. I make sure to pay attention to what students need and want to learn about dentistry. My life is now filled with the joy of helping other students discover their love for dentistry. Each month, I set up my office so I can bring students to see different procedures, from hygiene to full extractions. As president, I also help students find new and exciting ways to give back to the community. After completing a 4 year dental school program and training to become a new dentist, I plan to work in an underserved area and change that. I want to visit and help as many areas as possible. Due to the fact that there are not many African American dentists in these areas. The opportunity to help others see someone who looks like them will be enjoyable in a dental office. This means more people are less afraid of the dentist and I have the opportunity to educate them about the importance of dental health. I know this will make me a great dental professional one day. I hope you see not just another app, but a person who cares about others. A person who has found meaning in life and wants to use it to make the world a better place. I know people may think you can’t do this as a dentist alone. The same people would probably say that you can’t work, be a mother, wife and go to school. My path to becoming a veterinarian is not just a career; It is deeply rooted in my early experiences and driven by an unwavering passion for healing animals. Growing up in Kalispell, Montana, I was introduced to the world of veterinary medicine at a young age, a world that became my refuge amidst the challenges of my upbringing. When I was seven years old and living on the reservation with my parents, I lived a life that was neither rich nor poor. Despite the turmoil caused by my father’s struggles with alcoholism and an aggressive and abusive home environment, a pivotal moment on my seventh birthday paved the way that would shape my future. My father, who had been away for months, returned with a gift: a pink medicine bag. This seemingly simple gift lit a flame in me and sparked an early fascination with animal health. As we did not have regular veterinary care for our horses, dogs and cats due to financial constraints, I improvised and used my medical toy kit to treat our animals. Even though my stethoscope was unusable, it became a tool for listening to imaginary heartbeats, and my toy thermometer ended up in our pets’ mouths, driven by an innate desire to care for them. This childhood experience laid the foundation for my dream of becoming a veterinarian. Over the years, I have had to face many challenges. While working as a veterinary assistant while juggling two other jobs in high school, I struggled academically but persevered by double majoring, playing sports, and graduating early. Realizing that education was the key to a better life for my family, I enlisted in the United States Army at age 19 as a combat medic with the promise of a free college education. While on active duty, I graduated from American Military University, the only institution that complied with my rigorous schedule and service commitments. Science piqued my interest and I enjoyed every moment of my learning experience. While deployed to Iraq in 2022 as a medical sergeant and platoon leader, I worked alongside a veterinarian and nurse, caring for people and animals during emergency surgeries and providing quality care for wildlife and surrounding villages. In the midst of the intensity of a patrol in enemy territory, I suffered serious shrapnel injuries that marked a turning point in my life. When I was flown to the United States, I spent a month recovering, battling not only the physical injuries, but also the invisible scars of post-traumatic stress disorder. In the period that followed, as I struggled with my recovery and post-traumatic stress disorder, I found comfort in caring for animals. Volunteering at animal shelters, zoos, and wildlife rehabilitation programs has become a therapeutic option. After my medical discharge in July 2024, I refocused on my ultimate goal: becoming a veterinarian. My journey is more than a series of events; It is a testament to resilience, determination and an unwavering commitment to a childhood dream.

The winner will be publicly announced on November 18, 2024. Prior to the announcement date, we may contact finalists to ask further questions regarding their application. We will work with donors to review all applications against the scholarship criteria. Winners will be selected based on the relevance of their application.
Prize checks will be sent to the financial aid office of the winner’s academic institution on their behalf to be applied to their tuition and fees and on behalf of their institution (subject to academic requirements). If the prize constitutes a qualifying non-tuition educational expense, we will work directly with the winner to distribute the prize and ensure that it is used for qualifying expenses.
Before the scholarship is awarded, the recipient will be asked to confirm their academic registration status. Depending on the circumstances, verification of your student ID and/or most recent transcript may be required.
