Growing up in a turbulent family of seven, I became self-sufficient at a young age. Amid the chaos, my escape was found in the flickering images on the television screen. While others explored the outdoors, I was captivated by the magic of movies. However, one big problem gradually became clear – the lack of representation of people like me. Where were the stories that reflected the different cultures and experiences I saw in my Charlotte community? This disconnect ignited a fire in me to create change through filmmaking. The harsh reality of Hollywood’s narrow representation hit home when my sister, an aspiring actress, was bluntly told by her agent, “You’re black, black” — code for not fitting the typical mold. I was furious that her racial background might limit her options. In that moment, I vowed to use my talents to amplify underrepresented voices and stories through film. Over the years I have worked tirelessly to develop my skills and create short films that deal with complex social issues such as racial prejudice. My film “What Makes Us So Different” was recognized at the National Youth Free Expression Film Festival, proving that I have the ability to create impactful content. I am now ready to take the next step at the University of Southern California. USC’s top film program provides the perfect launching pad for my vision. Through the innovative Business of Cinematic Arts program, I will receive comprehensive training from industry experts in the creative and business aspects of filmmaking. The required internship and hands-on opportunities will allow me to gain valuable real-world experience. As well as a narrow cohort where only 55 students were accepted to participate at the world level. My unwavering passion, coupled with my advanced education, will equip me to become a force for positive change in Hollywood. I will draw from my unique experiences to create films that reflect the world’s beautiful diversity – to ensure that no child ever feels invisible. Through inclusive storytelling, I will not only imagine a better tomorrow, but bring it to life on the big screen. This vision rests on the hope that one day we will live in a society where intelligence and skills are valued more than ethnicity. Where harmful stereotypes no longer permeate the stories we see. I used to think such a dream was impossible because only 5% of filmmakers are women of color like me. Still, I refuse to be deterred by the daunting odds. I am confident in my ability to have immigrant grandparents who managed to come to this country with nothing, not even English, and watch them thrive, as well as having two formally educated parents and surviving the first year of high school. to accept the challenges ahead. I am driven by the belief that increasing diverse representation in the media catalyzes social change. By bringing diverse perspectives through inclusive storytelling, I hope to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of everyone’s differences. Investing in my education means investing in a more inclusive future where everyone can see themselves represented on television screens.
I’ve been told that the smell of death is something you can never forget. It permeates everything it touches, twisting in your mind and body as it splits you in two: the person you once were and the person you seek. So the destruction of the place you once called home or the persecution of your people will leave a similar feeling. For me, these are distant possibilities, but for many migrants, refugees and asylum seekers, this is their reality. My father was such a person. As refugees from the Liberian civil war, he and his mother came to America with nothing to support each other. My father overcame many challenges to become who he is today: a loving father, a graduate, and a pillar of his community. My mother shares a similar story when she left her home in Kenya to seek a better life in the United States. She and my father raised me with values that they want to be more present in the world: kindness, justice and infinite generosity. As a first-generation American, born to resilient and dedicated parents who triumphed over so many obstacles to be where they are today, my heart breaks for those caught up in humanitarian crises beyond their control. I dream of devoting my education and career to serving them by advocating for global peace, sustainable practices and development of less fortunate countries through the United Nations, where I will also triumph as a leader in the international community. The first step on this journey is my undergraduate studies, where I will dedicate myself to academic excellence while pursuing a degree in international relations, concentrating in peace, conflict and cultural identity studies. A college education is more than a learning opportunity; it is a critical time for growth, achievement, exploration and connection. Using this, I will continue to use avenues for exploration, research and leadership in my community to demonstrate what it means to be a global citizen. In addition, I plan to pursue a law degree specializing in international law because of how closely related this field is to international relations. I will then work to achieve my dream by getting a seat at the United Nations and promoting peace and prosperity for all. Starting my career at the United Nations will allow me to shape the future of the international community by advocating for the rights of citizens and sovereign nations and encouraging the development of less fortunate countries. In addition to working with the UN to achieve world peace and constantly improving myself to stay true to my mission, I want to positively influence nations’ views on global affairs. Even now, I see ways the international community can improve our peacekeeping systems to better serve us, and I want to educate myself on how to make these changes a reality. Although I am only one person with one voice, I refuse to turn away from the suffering of others. My parents’ courage and my passion for service empowered me to aim high on my journey to change the world. According to the Charter of the United Nations, we must all promote social progress and a better standard of living in greater freedom.
