Local Scholarships For High School Seniors Planning College In Denver – June 6, 2024 (DENVER) – Ten Colorado community college students will receive $25,000 in annual grants from the PepsiCo Foundation when they transfer to four top universities this fall.
From Aurora Community College, Denver Community College and Front Range Community College, the recipients are among 50 scholars selected nationally for the Excellence in Life & Education (S.M.I.L.E) Scholarship. In addition to financial support, the program provides researchers with additional services such as on-the-job training and professional development to support their studies.

The S.M.I.L.E program is based on a partnership between the Colorado Foundation for Community Colleges and the PepsiCo Foundation. It is one of 20 institutions participating in PepsiCo’s Uplift Scholarship Program, which allocates $40 million to support certificate and college students. By 2020 S.M.I.L.E. And Uplift programs have awarded nearly 2,800 scholarships, with more than 90% of scholars on track to complete their studies.

Colorado students who started at a community college will soon have the opportunity to pay for part of their education with a new scholarship if they transfer to a four-year bachelor’s degree program.
The scholarship, known as the Reischer Bridge Scholars Program, supports students in the Bridge to Bachelor program – a program that guarantees admission to a four-year college for first-time college students who graduate from a community college.
The new Reischer Bridge Scholarship provides financial aid for students their first two years before transferring to one of eight schools and covers about half of the annual cost of attending a Colorado community college. Once students transfer, they are eligible for another Reischer Scholarship.

Together, the scholarships provide low-income students with the financial support they need when they first attend community college and after completing four years of college.
“As we all know, when you can’t take more than three to six credits at a time, it delays your graduation and sometimes it leads to hopelessness. The future,” said Community College Foundation Director Adam Cermak.
Cermak said money has a big impact on the value of higher education in society. Community college tuition, books and fees cost about $5,000 a year, he said.
The Bridge Scholars Program awards $2,000 annually to students at one of the state’s 13 community colleges. Once awarded, students who receive a Reisher Bridge Scholarship can apply for the Reisher Scholars Program, which provides juniors and seniors with $4,000 to $15,000 annually for one of four years.

Both grants were funded by the Denver Foundation; The new bridge grant is the first associated with a specific program at one of Colorado’s community colleges, Cermak said.
For five years, the $1 million-a-year drive will increase the ability to pay a portion of community college tuition, especially for juniors struggling with tuition and debt.
About 9,000 students are enrolled in the Bridge to Bachelors program, but the scholarship is for students who want to transfer to a university that partners with the Reischer Scholars program.
Students cannot apply for scholarships. Instead, they must have 30 or fewer college credits, have a record of degree completion, attend school full time and have at least a 3.0 GPA. Students must demonstrate financial need through a Pell Eligibility, a major grant that helps cover the cost of college.

The Denver Foundation also funds college counselors who help students navigate the college journey and other support services that are part of the program.
Landon Pirius, the community college’s vice president of academic and student affairs, said in a statement that the scholarship program will help create a clear curriculum for those students.
He said the university is committed to making the transition process as easy and streamlined as possible.
Denver Foundation Scholarship Advisor Joshua Raines said the nonprofit’s goal with the Bridge to Bachelors Scholarship is to build a strong foundation from two to four colleges.

And Sharon Harper, the foundation’s director of grants and scholarships, said more college students are focused on going to four-year colleges, which means scholarships aren’t being awarded to students who might go down other paths. Students will have more time with transfer plans, he said.
Colorado launched a free program last year to train students in the medical field. This year, he expanded the job to include teaching, firefighting, forestry, construction and law enforcement, among other jobs the state faces labor shortages. Students in current programs may receive up to two years of college tuition, including books and fees.
Colorado also offers other programs to help cover the cost of college, such as dual enrollment and concurrent enrollment. Concurrent and dual enrollment programs allow high school students to enroll in college courses and earn credit.
