Domestic violence was present throughout. As a self-motivated student, I always believe that whenever you take on an assignment; execute it and do it quite fairly. It can be education, sport, activity or activity that I give the best knowledge. Once I start a task, I don’t stop until I finish it. And I think this is a very important and beautiful characteristic of every human being. I think the best way to improve what you learn is to use the knowledge in a practical job. So my goal is to use my personal experience and knowledge to make a difference from within; so I now work at a shelter for victims of domestic violence as a youth leader. I mean the adult manager. This scholarship will allow me to expand my career opportunities and continue to receive the best possible education to provide counseling to victims of domestic violence. My mother was a victim of DV for 12 and a half years and it still haunts me and my siblings to this day. Because of this injury, I still struggle with distraction in certain situations. Whatever we go through, I promise to do everything I can to make sure no child suffers as much as we did; that the child should not see how his mother was buried; so the child will not worry about looking back every time he goes to school; so the child will not hear how his mother is threatened and insulted.

Being the only black and minority student in my high school in Brazil nearly drove me to suicide. So the discrimination had a bigger impact on me and my dream job. I experienced many racist insults and attacks, not only from students, but also from teachers. Fortunately, my family supported me throughout the childhood I lost to the trauma of racism and oppression. It’s so funny that growing up in Brazil before moving to the US as a teenager really got me interested in serving the needs of others because I immediately saw the huge disparity in the health care system, both in cost and in the treatment of patients. My passion for pharmacy has only grown over the years. During my senior year of high school, I was accepted into the Miller Career and Technology Center’s Pharmacy Technology and Pharmacy Program, which included training for a Pharmacy Technician Certificate. Unfortunately, due to my mother’s battle with cancer, who unfortunately later passed away, and my father being at risk for contracting COVID-19, I was unable to attend classes or practice. Although I was initially dismayed by this missed opportunity, I never lost my desire to pursue my pharmacy technician certification. In fact, I also became more determined. I am currently studying Biology as my major with Chemistry and Entrepreneurship as minors. Since I am on the Pre-Pharmacy track, I plan to get my Pharm.D. degree from the UNT Health Sciences Center after graduating from the University of North Texas with a BS in biology. So, I want to continue my journey by becoming a real pharmacist and dispensing medicine to needy patients. My dream is to open my own business, perhaps after working for years in a store or pharmacy. I would like to open my own pharmacy so that I can develop a personal relationship with my patients more than other pharmacies and provide for their overall health. I intend to work in this field to help people in my environment and even beyond with health problems by providing them with the right medicine to live a fulfilling life. Finally, I hope to be able to help minorities who have been neglected by the health care system, which aims to help them achieve excellent health, given that I understand how discrimination affects people, including in the medical field, as i the mother was the victim. I am willing to dedicate years of my life to studying and learning how the system has failed people and ways to improve the health of our society and help heal the world, one person at a time. In the past, I was confused even when it made sense, just because I was a stubborn person about what I saw as a child. However, over the past year I have met with many counselors and friends to talk about my health. Through this, I opened myself up to his ideas and opinions about areas of my life that needed improvement, which allowed me to see myself in a different light and therefore allowed me to seek improvement. Again, not only will I be open to correction, but I will ask for impartiality, whether or not I’m sure it will directly affect someone. It will be a rewarding time that I look forward to so that other people can have a healthier experience.

I am a freshman studying Biomedical Engineering at North Carolina A&T State University. My biggest career goal is to try to get a doctorate after I finish my undergrad. I want to get a job in a pharmaceutical or biomechanical company because I want to help improve medical equipment. I have always been interested in the role of medical robots and how they can influence and improve the everyday activities of society. I will achieve these goals by networking with developers and administrators, participating in engineering research projects, and gaining additional learning experiences in Biomedical Engineering. Since the beginning of my freshman year of high school, I have tried to use my engineering knowledge. For two consecutive years, I participated in the Young Scholars Research Program (YWISE) with the University of Texas at Dallas. A freshman in high school, I worked on a team to build an underwater drone for underwater exploration. The purpose of the drone is to facilitate research in water areas that cannot be physically located. Last year I worked with a group to experiment with the elastocaloric effect, the expansion and contraction of elastic fibers to cool things by conduction. A small model refrigerator with this effect was designed to demonstrate an alternative cooling system without the use of pollutants in modern refrigerators. Additionally, in the summer of 2021, I am going to complete my first internship at UC Irvine-Pathways to become an AAMU Mechanical Engineering Associate. I worked with my mentors to implement the Picasso method by blindly masking a protein fluorophore using Matlab. During my research, I learned that Picasso is useful in bioengineering when trying to remove invasive cells for identification. Most recently, I was a mentor in the Apple Women In Science Engineering Mentorship program. In this program, I learned how to prepare for graduation, interviews, and transition to industrial work. I am currently a leader in the HBCU Close to First Class program. I lead my year-long interns through a 10-week program that includes graduate study. Attending daily industry outreach workshops and creating a valuable video with my supervisor detailing our experience in the program. Finally, I also want to learn more about the pharmaceutical/biotech industry and would like to do an internship in biotech to expand my knowledge. I want to advance medical equipment to make it more affordable and safer for future medical procedures.
