Working with the Waves Education Foundation with students of color, students from low-income families and students to make a college degree affordable and accessible.

Thanks to a new $300,000 grant, the Making Waves college and career success program — offering scholarships, college and career coaching and financial planning support — is now open in all nine Gulf states.

“We want to support more students to get a college degree, pay for it and graduate debt-free,” said Patrick O’Donnell, executive director of the Making Waves Education Foundation.

Up to twenty students will receive up to $20,000,000 in funding each over five years and enter the Making Waves college and career success program.

Bay Area Opportunities is open to high school students from low-income communities in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano or Sonoma.

Making Waves has a multi-step and targeted application process, designed to capture all aspects of student experience, knowledge and skills and align with the Making Waves program as a whole.

“By a comprehensive application and selection process, we mean that we look for a student’s strengths on multiple dimensions,” said Aiyana Mourtos, chief program officer at Making Waves. “And we provide many ways for students to share with us—by writing, speaking, and asking them questions.”

The first step in the application process is to ensure that students are accepted. The next step is to look for letters of application, written responses and videos of students that can show their strengths, interests and priorities.

What goal did you set for yourself that didn’t go as planned? How did you overcome any setbacks or obstacles?

“At Making Waves, we are interested in the level of commitment students have to attending colleges and their personal ‘whys,'” Mourtos said. “We are looking for students who show passion and determination to achieve their goals – any goal!”

Unlike many academic scholarships, Making Waves accepts students from all majors and maintains a minimum 2.0 GPA from the standard college.

“We’re looking for students whose transcripts may not be As and Bs, but behind it is a story of how they walked and persevered,” Mourtos said.

The Basic Fund

Established over 30 years ago, Making Waves is constantly revising its approach based on best practices.

For example, according to a National Institute for Student Research survey conducted by Scholarship America and the Common App, students in the highest income quartile receive an average of 203% more private scholarships than students in the bottom quartile. In addition, their review shows that billions of dollars in scholarships are awarded each year based on academic, academic, academic and athletic programs.

“It leads to an unmet need,” O’Donnell said. “Students from low-income families who a) are ready for college, but b) have low GPAs and test scores need scholarships to get into college,” he said.

“We’re taking our program to the next level to evaluate students based on their strengths in addition to GPA and test scores. We know from our research that students with different GPAs and test scores can actually attend and do well in college.”

Paying For Graduate School: 7 Funding Strategies

Making Waves and Controls is what this team learned from the college and career success program that supports students at Making Waves Academy, a public charter school in Richmond, and high school students throughout the Bay Area.

“With the graduates of Making Waves Academy, we’ve seen that students from a variety of academic backgrounds can succeed in college when they have the right goals and the right support, like the support we provide,” said Mourtos.

“We offered programs to students in the Bay Area primarily based on academic merit and financial need, but we felt it necessary to support a larger portion of the student body and have a greater impact,” he said.

“Giving scholarships to more students leads to a greater impact in terms of overall attendance and graduation outcomes,” added O’Donnell.

The Making Waves program offers more than just college tuition. In addition to scholarships, students benefit from a support system of college coaches, financial advisors and career experts.

Students collaborate with the Making Waves team to reflect on their results and chart a path to their goals. Participants graduated from college twice as often as their peers, and 85% earned their college degrees without student loans.

“We look for students who are a good fit for our program because of its comprehensive nature,” Mourtos said. “Our job is to partner with students, so we want to be clear about our responsibilities and theirs. This requires a level of self-awareness and mutual support. “

Support includes academics, professional development, financial aid and budgeting, campus community and wellness. This can range from financial planning to choosing a course, finding an ID, to getting a job after college.

Follow Your Bliss

“This is where self-learning and mutual support come into play. To really benefit from this type of support, students must be willing to reflect on their own experiences to help improve. “

To apply to the Bay Area program, students must register on Making Waves University and the professional chat, follow Making Waves on TikTok, and complete an application. The multi-stage application opens on January 15, and all stages of the application must be submitted by February 26, 2024.
