Calculate your award amount by determining tuition and required fees, subtract any other sources of gift aid, and award the remaining amount as a North Star Promise Scholarship.

Before calculating your award, the program will take into account any other gift funding sources you receive.  “Gift Aid” is financial assistance that does not require repayment, such as scholarships, grants, bursaries, third-party payments, and tuition waivers.  Loans and job training are not sources of gift aid. The goal of this strategy is to use program funds to provide a tuition-free path to a college education for as many eligible students as possible.

Students will be notified of North Star Promise eligibility through an award notification in eServices. Because the amount you receive depends on your individual enrollment record, tuition and fee account, and financial aid eligibility, your calculation may not occur at the same time as other financial aid eligibility. Students may be notified of their eligibility to cover tuition and fees at an exact eligibility amount determined after the semester begins.

There is no maximum time you can claim the prize. However, for students doing a 2-year degree, you will be awarded a total of 60 credits. For students doing a 4-year degree, you will be awarded a total of 120 credits.  The maximum credits each student is eligible for is a total of 120 credits.

This award is calculated per term. If new sources of gift aid become available to you, the North Star Promise Scholarship will be recalculated.

Dependent students whose parent(s) and step-parents’ AGI are available for dependents whose program’s family AGI limit is below $80,000.  When the parents are separated, divorced, never married and do not live together, the parent providing the student with the most financial aid must be a FAFSA or Minnesota Dream Act registered parent.  It is the parent who reviews income in determining North Star Promise eligibility.  If the parent providing more financial aid is remarried on the date of filing the FAFSA or Minnesota Dream Act, the other parent’s AGI will be considered in determining eligibility.

Independent Students considers the student’s AGI for program eligibility.   If the student is married, the combined AGI of the student and their spouse must be less than $80,000 to qualify for the North Star Promise Scholarship. Here you can review what makes a student dependent or independent.

Yes, if you meet all eligibility requirements and the total amount of your other “grant aid” sources (scholarships, grants, transfers, scholarships) already covers tuition and required fees, you will not be guaranteed a North Star Scholarship. . This is because the amount of other aid has already provided you with enough money to pay tuition and required fees.

More information about dependent and independent students can be found on the Minnesota Office of Higher Education’s North Star Promise Scholarship FAQ webpage.

Endowed scholarship funds are established with donations of $25,000 or more. These permanent funds continue to grow and provide each year, as only a portion of the income each year is given in scholarship support. Endowed scholarship funds often honor a family member, mentor or friend in college and can be funded through a single gift, multi-year gifts or bequests.

Some donors provide scholarship support each year. Individuals, corporations, and foundations can establish a designated fund of $2,000 or more each year for four or more years. These funds are fully utilized each year and therefore do not generate income.
