Can the installation be customized? That’s the question the founders of the Texas Minority Alliance asked in 1974. At the time, there was nothing trivial about building a strong and diverse STEM workforce in the state. But the underrepresentation of women and minorities in STEM fields is pronounced. To address this shortage, the mayor of the Dallas Community College District (DCCD) met with the vice president of General Electric to discuss how STEM workers can better employ the little things.
That conversation revealed a major problem: While STEM fields have struggled to recruit candidates from minority communities, students have lacked the necessary knowledge and skills. In 1974, of the more than 50,000 students on DCCD’s seven campuses, not a single student was enrolled in appropriate math/science courses to prepare them for an engineering career.
The minister did what any good engineer would: identify the problem (lack of exposure to STEM careers and lack of college preparation); assemble a team (local teachers, experts and leaders in the local community); and institute testing methods to encourage early entry of minority students into STEM careers.
Future Leaders In Technology Scholarship
These initial tests were successful in Dallas and organizers decided to expand them to the entire state. They proposed a simple plan: a “covenant” in each area was set up to have a local administrator, deputy administrator, secretary-treasurer, and a local council of 10-20 businesses, public schools, colleges/universities, and community leaders. Each partnership, supported by local volunteers, will work with local school administrators to provide an ongoing program of assistance to math/science teachers and school counselors to reach the undiscovered student.
The result is the Texas Association of Minorities in Engineering. In addition to the original Dallas alliance, other local organizations were established in the Rio Grande Valley, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio and received 501(c)(3) status on September 27, 1976.
Over the years, we have seen a slow but significant change in numbers. We have a lot of work to do, but our power is growing.
In the Texas-wide engineering competition, 97% of student participants – more than 70% Hispanic or African American and 45% female – plan to attend college, with 50% of seniors majoring in engineering and 90% in STEM. currently 14 strong and growing chapters, and over the next 40 years we plan to continue building a STEM workforce that reflects the diversity and strength of our great state of Texas.
