Scholarships For First-generation College Students In San Francisco Bay – All students entering undergraduate admissions each fall are considered eligible for a UCSC scholarship in March based on the UC Application for Undergraduate Admissions & Scholarships. The decision is based on a thorough review of the UC application and performance within the scope of the opportunity.
The Sabatte Family Scholarship is the highest scholarship made possible through the extraordinary legacy of UCSC alumnus Richard “Rick” Sabatte (Kresge ’75, Psychology). This scholarship ensures that high-income students are fully supported after other benefits and scholarships. Open to first-year freshmen who are California residents, including those eligible for the AB540 exemption.

It is considered a ‘full-ride scholarship’, so the student’s tuition fee only covers the cost of attendance for the academic year. Award amounts vary annually and range from $9,000 to $17,000. For four years, the total is $36,000 to $68,000. The amount is based on each student’s financial need from the Financial Aid Application (FAFSA). or CADAA) and other available sources. The scholarship is renewed when Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) is met and is paid for four or 12 years, excluding summer.

Regents Scholarships are awarded in recognition of outstanding academic achievement. Financial need is not required. Selection is based on a thorough evaluation of the strength and depth of the high school’s curriculum, grades and other academic criteria, including recognition of merit in relation to opportunities. Regents scholarships are open to first-year freshmen and transfer students, including internationals, nonresidents, and California residents, including those eligible for AB540 scholarships.
The value of the award is US$5,000 per year and is renewable if Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) is met. For first-year students, this amounts to $20,000 paid over four years. To be approved for transfer, you must pay $10,000 over two years. In addition to the financial award, students receive registration and are guaranteed housing during their first year at UCSC unless all housing and travel expenses are met. Next year, scholars who return on time for university housing will be entered into the housing lottery. If a student does not receive housing through the lottery, that person’s waitlist application will be considered as one of the first students to be offered their position.

The Campus Merit Scholarship is open to first-year freshmen and transfer students, including internationals, nonresidents, and California residents, including those who qualify for AB540.
The value of the award is US$2,000 per year and is renewable if Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) is met. For first-year students, this amounts to $8,000 paid over four years. To be allowed to transfer it costs $4,000 paid over two years.

This scholarship was established by Ruth Benner in memory of her grandparents Frederick and Theresa Hihn to assist students with financial need. Since Ruth Benner’s death in 1988, her son-in-law, Richard T. Lorenz, Jr., has continued the donation.
This scholarship was established in 1969 in memory of Ruth Emma Johnson, who was a resident of Santa Cruz County. Funding supports scholarships based on ability and need in all aspects of study.
City College Of San Francisco
This scholarship was established in memory of the late principal of Hollywood High School and founder of Los Angeles City College.
This scholarship was established by Chancellor Emeritus Angus Taylor in 1982 in memory of his wife Patsy. This fund supports students in need of financial aid who demonstrate academic excellence.
These scholarships are supported by various donors. Scholarships are awarded to new, incoming students and are limited to four years.
This scholarship was established in 1975 in memory of Santa Cruz County resident Dorothy Wilson to support undergraduate students.
Student Enrichment Opportunities
Adolph Miller and Mary Sprague Miller donated property to the Regents at Boulder Creek for use as a meeting/recreational facility. In 1994, the Regents sold the building, which was divided to create 4 new campuses: one at Berkeley and 3 at UCSC. Two of UCSC’s scholarships fund environmental studies (Sproul and Newton) and several real estate transactions created the Adolph C. Miller & Mary Sprague Miller Endowment to support student scholarships. Amai Verang & Lola Remi Scholarship Fund which we started in 2021 under the leadership of one of our coordinators, Daniel Lazo.

In late 2021, Lola Remiko died in the Philippines. In dealing with this grief of loss, I looked to the women in my life who encouraged me to believe in myself. Lola Remi may be at sea, but her generosity and love lives with my mother and aunt. Likewise, Mother Verang was the Lola of my life, being her last adopted grandchild. I still feel his joy and care to this day.
To recover, I returned to my residence. I created the Lola Scholarship Fund through LEAD Filipino to give back to those who have given me so much.
Lehigh University Honors First Posse Scholar Graduates
This scholarship honors two of my most outstanding students who were teachers in their own right. Mrs. Verang raised nine children as a single mother. He is also a high school teacher in the Philippines and brought his entire family to the US for a better life. On the other hand, Lola Remi never finished high school but worked hard as a seamstress and farmer. Because of his kindness and ambition, he put his seven children through college to help them build a better life. They are both advocates for higher education and this foundation is part of their legacy.
Last year, we created our first scholarship, awarding $3,500 to four talented college students across the Bay Area. Each is in a different field, such as ethnic studies, political science, immigration law, and molecular biology. Three recently received degrees from their respective institutions – San Francisco State University, University of San Francisco and University of California Berkeley.
I am excited to continue funding this year to award three $1,000 scholarships to a new cohort of current and future Filipino American college students. This year, we are expanding the California Foundation nationwide and partnering with nybold.org to process applicants.
I am asking for your help in building the security of this fund for many years to come. Not only do I want to honor my song, but I also want to give award winners and donors a place to honor the important women in their lives and share their stories as Filipino-Americans making a difference today.

We are a non-profit organization dedicated to FilAm social inclusion, grassroots leadership and community-focused activities based in San Jose, California. At Making Waves Education Foundation, we are here to work with students to make college accessible and degrees attainable. We’re supporting more students in the San Francisco Bay Area with new scholarship opportunities!
Twenty eligible students will receive up to $20,000 each in scholarship money – and enroll in the Making Waves Education Foundation’s College and Care Program.
Among the requirements, students must register with Making Waves’ college and career chatbot, follow Making Waves on TikTok and fill out a scholarship form.
2024 Bay Area Scholarships
The scholarship is part of Making Wave’s education and career development program. We work with first-generation students, students of color, and students from low-income backgrounds throughout their college journey to support them in achieving their goals.
Students receive the full support system of Creating Waves college coaches, financial planners and career experts. Student support includes academics, career development, financial aid and budgeting, campus environment and health.
