From a young age, my family instilled in me the idea that I could achieve anything I put my mind to. They immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic in the 1990s to give me the privileges I now have as a first-generation citizen. I am very proud of this position and thank you for the privilege that I have. I am privileged enough to make a difference with the endless possibilities available to me; Access to higher education and an opportunity to pursue the career I want. I refuse to use these privileges. Being a lawyer, I intend to use this privilege to make positive changes. I will speak a voice for those who have been silenced and give them a chance to live the American dream like my parents and my mother. According to the wise words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: “We must all live together as brothers or die alone as fools.” In an increasingly polarized society, it is our duty as citizens to work together to improve our atmosphere. By earning my BA in Political Science and then going to law school, I will gain a deep understanding of our legal system as well as professional experience in a field I am deeply passionate about. I am determined to bring positive change to the courtroom by taking advantage of every opportunity I am given. In particular, I developed a deep passion for immigration law. Nationally, only 37% of immigrants receive legal aid during court cases. Countless immigrants have braved experienced attorneys and the complex legal system on their own. Inequalities like these are what drive my love of law and making a difference one day. I hope this issue will be resolved in a courtroom, through a trial, or eventually through legislation. Where there is a real ability to make a positive impact on my community. Throughout my high school career, I have been involved in many clubs and organizations that help me achieve this goal. The most influential club I have joined is the Angelo del Toro-Puerto Rican-Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute, which gave me the opportunity to travel to Albany and discuss various laws with my peers. In addition, I was also part of a mock trial, which allowed me to take a mock trial and practice law. This opportunity only strengthened my interest in becoming a lawyer and also helped my confidence and public speaking skills. I am determined to bring positive change to the courtroom by taking advantage of every opportunity I am given. This scholarship will help me with the huge cost of college and I hope you will consider me for this award.
I strongly believe that the people you surround yourself with help make you who you are. It’s important to keep people who are good influences in your life and I hope to be one of those people in other people’s lives. For me, these influential people are my parents. Only thanks to the sacrifice of my parents, I have the opportunity to fulfill my dreams for them. I continue because my motivation for pursuing an academic career is to hear about the challenges my parents faced just to be able to give them the opportunity to go to college that they didn’t have. I want to prove to them that it was all worth it and carry on all the lessons I’ve learned as I navigate this new transition to adulthood. I choose nursing for many reasons. Nursing is a diverse profession that offers plenty of room for growth and new opportunities. In addition, I saw firsthand the impact nurses have on patients and their families. I have close family members like my father who is battling Huntington’s Chorea and my sister who has been battling Lupus Nephritis for the past four years; Not only did I see how much strength a nurse must have every day, but I also realized that even the smallest contributions make the biggest impact. Nurses have a positive effect on their patients even when the patient may be experiencing a storm of emotions, pain or stress without realizing it. I attended Rockland BOCES during my middle and high school years. Principles of Health Professions and accredited Nursing Assistant programs increased my confidence and preparedness to enter the healthcare field. During the two years, I participated in clinics primarily in geriatric care facilities, which allowed me to see firsthand what it is really like to work with patients and perform tasks. I quickly realized that nursing is much more than caring for patients. To win, you have to be friends too. I chose this career path to make a positive difference because at the end of the day it’s not about perfect grades or the biggest payoff, it’s about being human. Nursing is more than administering medications and charts; A nurse knows how to love and care even in the most difficult times.

As a child, I was always fascinated by the endless possibilities of building structures with Lego. I spent hours working on intricate designs and this early love of architecture and design led me to dream of a professional degree in architecture. My only problem was that I was told from a young age that architecture and engineering are “people’s work”. I went through high school thinking I couldn’t be an architect, not just because I was a woman, but a Hispanic woman without having the same opportunities as a kid my age in the state. It wasn’t until high school that I realized that a job is not assigned to someone because of their gender and that I am not deprived of opportunities because of my culture and place, but my culture shows my commitment to what I do; It shows my style, my influence! I want to continue my studies to become a skilled architect who can create sustainable and functional structures that are aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly. I am passionate about using design to improve people’s lives, and architecture provides a unique opportunity for this. In my architecture firm, I want to work on large projects that are known to have a positive impact on communities, such as schools, public spaces and housing. I want to use my skills to create buildings that meet their needs and contribute to the overall well-being of the environment. I want to build houses where people can come and say this is my home! I want people to feel comfortable in their homes and leave them from generation to generation so that all generations of the family can enjoy its beauty. Ultimately, my goal in pursuing a professional degree at Binghamton University is to learn from experts in the field and collaborate with colleagues to develop innovative solutions to complex design challenges. This career will not only fulfill you, but also make you happy. I am excited to have the opportunity to turn my passion for architecture and design into a profession, and I believe that with the Spanish scholarship I will succeed.
