Scholarships For Hispanic Students Pursuing Nursing Degrees In Philadelphia
Melanie A. Mariano, MSN, FNP-BC (she) is interested in advancing social justice by identifying and correcting systemic discrimination in health care decision-making and expanding health care services in communities. She is a BSN and MSN graduate of the University of Pennsylvania in Nursing. After graduating from Penn Nursing, she worked as a nurse practitioner at the Free Library of Philadelphia to connect with people in need of medical care. Clinically, she currently works as a Family Nurse Practitioner in the Atlanta Metro Area. She is currently completing her nursing degree and master’s in public health at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and the Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Asian Nursing Scholarships
Kathleen Scott received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2006 from Hawaii Pacific University, Master of Science in Nursing in 2008 from the university, and Doctor of Nursing in 2019 from the university. She became a Fellow of the ACNM in 2024. She studies Nebraska Medicine as a registered nurse and volunteers on the faculty at the University of Nebraska. In 2023, a new way to bring Dr. Scott taught him an “Excellence in Educational Service” award through the University of Nebraska. Throughout his studies, he enjoyed guidance and encouragement from his professors and peers. This support and encouragement greatly influenced his success and allowed for more educational opportunities that motivated him to continue his studies well after his higher education. She is committed to improving maternal health in her community to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality through her involvement in non-governmental organizations. The results of her DNP project, a project focused on the diagnosis and treatment of anxiety and depression in pregnancy, have influenced and improved patient care. She established a volunteer volunteer program using fellow health students to provide bedside care to chronically ill and pregnant patients. She works with local doula organizations, improving their access to continuing education and promoting inclusiveness in the birth community. Throughout her career, she has trained many students and residents, developing a commitment to evidence-based and compassionate care.
Carrie Belin is a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner and a graduate of the Johns Hopkins DNP Program, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Georgetown University School of Nursing, and Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. He also completed fellowships at Georgetown and the University of California Irvine.

Said Dr. Robert White is receiving a Mentored Research Training Grant (MRTG) from the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) for his project entitled “Health Disparities in obstetrical care and Delivery Outcomes Before and After the Implementation of an Enhanced Postoperative Recovery System. “
Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
Disparities in reproductive health care have been widely reported, with disproportionately higher mortality rates among black women and higher morbidity among pregnant women, said Dr. White. The two-year, $250,000 grant will support Dr. White on the results of using the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol for birth outcomes and developing a data-driven dashboard for clinicians. The grant will strengthen Dr. White for action that promotes justice and patient justice. said Dr. Kane Pryor is a major league coach.
In the first part of this work, Dr. White and researchers from the Center for Perioperative Outcomes examined disparities in newborn health care across the country using databases from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP). In the second part, they will study the results of the evidence-based ERAS protocol.
“We look at ERAS programs before and after outcomes of white, black, Hispanic, and Asian patients to see if new interventions reduce or eliminate existing disparities,” said Dr. White.
The purpose of Dr. White uses the research from the first two research questions to create a data-driven dashboard for clinicians that can help provide patient care recommendations and visualize data.

Michelle Debbink, MD/PhD FACOG is an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. He grew up in the Air Force and enjoyed frequent travel within the United States and abroad. He received his BA in Sociology and Policy Studies from Rice University and his MD and PhD in Health Care Organization and Policy (Social Epidemiology Emphasis) from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He also completed his residency in pediatrics and obstetrics at the University of Michigan and transferred to the University of Utah for his obstetrics fellowship. She is currently an expert in the Reproductive Research Development Program and is funded to conduct community-based research on the causes of racial and ethnic disparities in maternal complications and deaths. Specifically, her research focuses on translating community health into resilience and developing interventions to close gaps in prenatal care for American Indian/Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander mothers and caregivers. . She also serves as Vice Chair of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Utah ObGyn Department and Associate Program Director of the Women’s Health Equity Grant at the University of Utah.
