Atkinson and his wife, Rita, honor UC San Diego Black Alumni from the San Diego Foundation (TSDF) The foundation scholarship fund donated $150,000. TSDF’s Black Alumni Scholarship is designed to continue to help increase the acceptance of Black students at UC San Diego and prepare them for graduate school and careers. Over the past five years, TSDF has awarded approximately 20 scholarships directly to first-year students. The $2,500 award is renewable annually for up to four years.

“Inequalities in educational opportunities for Black people have existed in our country for centuries,” said Manuelita Brown, president of the Black Alumni Scholarship Fund. “Unfortunately, this situation will take longer than my lifetime. can be solved. For 2020 graduate Caitlan Johnson, the TSDF Black Alumni Scholarship Program helped her secure a senior research position and launch a rewarding career after graduation.

“In addition to the financial support I received through my education, I am extremely grateful for my experience in the UC San Diego lab, which helped me land my dream job after graduation,” explained Johnson, who was awarded a graduate professorship . Scholarships are available through the SDF Community Scholars Initiative Scholarship Program. In 2022, the San Diego Foundation announced a historic award of more than $350,000 in college scholarships (the highest annual total) to 989 local students for the 2022-2023 school year.

Of the 2022-2023 scholarship recipients, 69% are first-generation college graduates or the first in their immediate family to pursue higher education, and 93% of students are considered low-income based on family contribution data.

This community education program is generously supported by 146 San Diego Foundation grantees and is the largest program in the region outside of the university system. Since 1997, the program has provided more than $46 million in grants to more than 12,000 San Diego college students.
