Top Graduate Scholarships For Women In Engineering From Los Angeles – The Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Society of Women Engineers awards scholarships each year to students entering college and students attending college in CO and WY. These scholarships aim to help students further develop and achieve their educational goals. We want to especially thank the volunteer judges who reviewed the entries. This year’s scholarship recipients were honored at the SWE RMS Spring Summit Awards Ceremony on April 20.
The Rocky Mountain Chapter of SWE awards three scholarships each year to college bound and returning students in CO and WY. We hope that this scholarship will help college students to further develop and achieve their educational goals. Thanks to the volunteer judges who reviewed the entries for the competition. This year it was a difficult task to choose the recipients from all of our incredible applicants. This year’s awards are truly outstanding and we are delighted to highlight some of their achievements.
Top Graduate Scholarships For Women In Engineering From Los Angeles
This year’s Dorolyn Lines Scholarship winner is Jessica Tomshack. This scholarship is dedicated to Dorolyn Lines, who in 1923 graduated in mechanical engineering and was one of the founders of the SWE Denver chapter, in memory. Like Dorolyn Lines, Jessica is studying mechanical engineering; focus on the Aerospace track. She will begin her 4th year at the Colorado School of Mines this fall. Jessica is involved with several organizations on the Minas Gerais campus and has held advanced leadership positions in SWE, such as Director of Girl Scout Engineering Day last year and VP of Outreach this year. She gained professional experience working for Northrop Grumman and working as a machine shop assistant. She will be interning at Ball Aerospace next summer. Jessica has maintained an impressive GPA and dedication to her studies while juggling these challenging volunteer and professional roles. Jessica combines a passion for engineering with a desire for leadership and a desire to inspire the next generation in STEM! Congratulations Jessica!
New Year Scholarships
Next, this year’s Lottye Miner Scholarship winner is Nassima Bettir. This scholarship is in memory of Lottye Miner, who was an early member of SWE and was very active in student counseling and career counseling. Nassima is a graduate student at the University of Wyoming pursuing a PhD in Petroleum Engineering. Previously, Nassima obtained a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Boumerdes in Algeria, graduating with a master’s degree. Nassima is passionate about applying her engineering knowledge to innovation in the oil industry. Their research uses advanced data analytics to make accurate predictions and make informed decisions. In addition to her research, Nassima is president of the student chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and serves as a teaching assistant. One of her references described her as one of the best teaching assistants he has worked with in the last 9 years! Between her technical abilities and meticulous approach to everything she does, Nassima will undoubtedly push the boundaries of her field. Congratulations Nassima!
The Pioneer Scholarship is in memory of three female engineering graduates from the University of Colorado and the founders of SWE: Hilda Counts Edgecomb, Elsie Eaves and Lou Alta Melton Merrill. After graduating in 1919 and 1920, they founded an early precursor to SWE. The recipient of the Pioneer Scholarship this year is Bridget Ediger. Bridget is majoring in civil engineering with a bachelor’s degree in global environmental sustainability at Colorado State University. Your goal is to apply your problem-solving skills to address the impacts of climate change through hydrology, hydraulics, and water resources engineering. Her supervisor from her internship at the Reclamation Bureau said it particularly well: “She never said no to an opportunity and proved that she could contribute effectively to the palm and keyboard business. Bridget is already a role model as a humanitarian engineer through her efforts at SWE, Rams Without Borders, and STEM4Kids, and her professional goals will continue to improve our world! In addition to the scholarships awarded by RMS, RMS also awards scholarships to senior students. This year we were honored to recognize three scholarship winners.
The Rocky Mountain Section awards scholarships to CO and WY graduates who will soon be college freshmen. Applicants are judged on their essays about why they are excited to become an engineer, extracurricular activities and leadership experiences, 2 letters of reference, and academic transcripts. This year we had many strong candidates from all over CO and WY. I want to thank our volunteer judges for evaluating these works. Celebrating Excellence: The 3rd Annual Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation Legacy Scholar Ceremony
Sityena Muzeyen of Overland High School in Aurora. She will study computer science at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Sityena is a first generation student in her family and how technology can be a challenge for those who did not grow up around computers and technology. This inspired Sityen to immerse herself in learning computer science, learning HTML/CSS, developing as a programmer in her robotics team, interning in the IT department of Cherry Creek School System, and more. She is very involved in many clubs at her school, including leadership roles in the Environmental Club and the Technology Student Association. She also volunteers tutoring middle school students and caring for cats at the Silly Friends League of Denver shelter. Congratulations Sityena!
Ryan O’Connor of Battle Mountain High School in Edwards. She will study civil or environmental engineering at the University of Notre Dame. Ryan loves math and science and wrote about how studying subjects like calculus and biology that she might not use in the future helped her develop problem-solving skills. While living in the Rockies, she learned that science is all around us in nature and is passionate about protecting our natural resources, creating clean energy and changing people’s lives. Last summer, she participated in the CURIE Academy Engineering Program at Cornell University, where she built a bioreactor to heat chicks and attended engineering lessons. Ryan is also very involved, including playing on his school’s football and basketball teams and speaking at TedxVail Youth. Congratulations Ryan!
Lewis-Palmer High School’s Camyrnas Pivarnik at the memorial. She is studying biomedical engineering at Duke University. As a child, Camryn was inspired to work with assistive devices when she saw a cat undergo amputation surgery, and watching a Paralympic women’s volleyball match also opened her eyes. She is inspired to create medical innovations that help people. Camryn was heavily involved in medical courses at both her school and local hospital, conducted independent research into phantom limb pain and designed specialized prostheses. She shared these findings with high school students and received recognition for her work at the American Health Professions Student State Leadership Conference. She plays competitive volleyball and is a student leader. Congratulations Camryn!
