The Center for First Generation Student Success was launched in June 2017 with the mission to become the leading resource for evidence-based practices, professional development, and knowledge building for the higher education community to achieve first-generation student success. In furtherance of this mission, the Center launched the First-Gen Forward Network, which offers a national model to increase overall first-generation student success, engagement, and institutional empowerment.

The National First-Generation College Celebration is held annually on November 8 to commemorate the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965.

Admission Application Requirements For First-year Students

Most of these scholarships require you to be a resident of Florida. Some require that you also attend a post-secondary school in Florida.
Bright Futures offers a group of renewable scholarships funded by the Florida Lottery, including the Gold Seal Vocational Scholars Program and the Gold Seal CAPE Scholars Program. Applicants must be accepted or enrolled in a degree or certificate program at an eligible public or independent postsecondary institution in Florida and must complete a minimum of six semester credit hours per semester without remediation. GPA and volunteer service requirements apply. In addition, students may be required to have minimum scores on the ACT, SAT, or Florida Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT). There are many ways to avail scholarships. For example, GSC scholarships can be used for an associate degree, applied technology degree, technical degree program (Associate in Applied Science or Associate of Science), or career certificate program. This grant is for Florida students who have financial need, whose parents have not earned a bachelor’s degree, and are enrolled in an eligible community college or state university in Florida. Read more about the First Generation Grant Program.

Students between the ages of 16 and 22 who are children of deceased or disabled veterans can apply for these scholarships, which are also available to spouses of disabled veterans or widowed and unmarried wives of deceased veterans. Applicants must be enrolled in a degree or certificate program and have the required number of hours completed per semester. It is available to students who wish to attend public colleges, career centers operated by district school boards, certified and licensed aviation maintenance schools that offer certification, and eligible four-year institutions. Florida residents who have not yet earned a bachelor’s degree are eligible to apply for this need-based program, which provides work experience to complement a student’s educational journey. This program is applicable to eligible community colleges, technical career centers, teacher training institutions, colleges and universities. Minimum GPA and enrollment requirements apply.
