With great power comes great responsibility. If this industry is to have a major impact on the world, the people who create that future must be a representative population. In other words, the decisions about how these products are made must be made by many different people.
Women are among those who are underestimated when it comes to technology. In fact, women make up nearly half of the US labor market, but only 28% of STEM workers. The gender gap is even wider in high-growth, high-paying jobs in technology and engineering.
We can all benefit from more women entering the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Gender diversity opens new perspectives and allows us to better solve complex problems of the future.
The Amplify Women in STEM Scholarship aims to support young women in the technology industry who are determined to leverage their strengths and innovate for the future.

Scholarship Essay “The Rise of Women in STEM” 12/14/2020 Samantha Bechtel Being raised by a single parent in a rural town delayed my discovery of my passion for science and higher education. I’m embarrassed to admit that I didn’t encounter engineering until my twenties; An age when most Americans have already completed their bachelor’s degrees. However, what I lacked in punctuality I made up for with passion. I quickly became obsessed with mathematics and engineering, and until the outbreak of Covid-19, I visited schools and makerspaces to teach and learn from others. Makerspace is a collaborative workshop that offers tools and technology such as 3D printers, soldering tools and industrial machinery for creative projects. In 2017, I was lucky enough to go on a cross-country road trip with a friend, and when we got to Boston, Massachusetts, we went to the Science Museum. I had seen an exhibition of 3D printed glass in a museum and had some experience with modern 3D printing, so I was very intrigued. There was a photo of this beautiful Neri Oxman on the information panel. “Neri Oxman is an American-Israeli designer and professor at the MIT Media Lab, where she leads the Mediated Matter Research Group. It is known for art and architecture that combine design, biology, computer science and materials engineering. I admired Neri for looking at design from a different perspective. He understands that we need to design sustainably and be inspired by nature. “Founded in 1985, the MIT Media Lab is one of the world’s leading academic and research organizations. Unconstrained by traditional disciplines, Media Lab designers, engineers, artists and scientists strive to create technologies and experiences that enable people to understand and transform their lives, communities and environments. My academic interests focus on designing sustainable and innovative living spaces and tools that improve the quality of life for the planet and people. I am currently studying mechanical engineering at Portland State University. If I succeed in completing graduate school, I want to join the Mediated Matter Research Group. I find everything they do fascinating. I am also interested in cooperation with NASA or companies like SpaceX that design and build advanced technologies. I hope to continue to inspire young women to pursue STEM subjects. I currently work at the Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), where I teach seventh grade engineering techniques. Before I started working at OMSI, I taught welding at Hedron Hackerspace. These programs are made possible through seventh grade career technology exploration in Portland Public Schools. As I mentioned before, I didn’t come across engineering until I was in my twenties, so I believe it is necessary to engage girls in STEM. I have a book called Women Lead and I read about women in STEM who are doing amazing things, and I want to inspire others to do the same as these women, and this scholarship will make that even more possible .
