Rhodes Scholarship Information Session For Graduate Students In Philadelphia – In this blog post, Principal John Nagle reflects on the events that made December a special time for him, including the annual Army-Navy football game and the selection of Rhodes and Schwarzman Scholars.
December is my favorite month. If it’s not “the most wonderful time of the year,” as the song says, it’s certainly close—and not just because of family gatherings for the holidays, though that’s a great joy. Every year in December there are other important events that highlight this month for me.

One of them is the biggest sporting event of the year, the Army-Navy football game, which has been held this year for many years in our city of brotherly love. (Philadelphia is the largest city, roughly equidistant between Annapolis and West Point, and is also known for throwing a good party.) The game itself has been described as the only year-round game that anyone who plays is willing to die for anyone who watches and After years of naval dominance, the competitive balance has returned. For many years, the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy has been played for, and the President often attends in person, as he did this year. After the army blocked the trophy awarded to the three football teams of the service academies, some tension was lifted.

Another annual event that makes December special for me is the selection of Rhodes Scholars. 31 years ago this month, I was selected as one of 32 Rhodes Scholars from across the United States to receive two years of graduate study at Oxford University. Rhodes Scholars are selected for their academic and leadership potential, their “interest and achievement in sports” and their willingness to “fight the world’s battles.” It just so happened that the day I was selected was also the day of the Army-Navy game; While I was waiting to see if I would go to Oxford, I went down to the lobby of the hotel where the interview was being held to check the results. The army won and so did I, an event that changed my life dramatically.

Not only did I attend Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar for two years and earn a Masters in International Relations, but I returned to Oxford after serving in Operation Desert Storm to “study” a doctorate in US Army Etiquette. Then I taught at West Point, preparing the next generation of West Point cadets to compete for Rhodes, Marshall, and Truman Scholarships and served on Rhodes Scholarship selection committees in Vermont and Arkansas. It was a pleasure to work with the best West Point had to offer and then compare these young men and women to the best of our great nation, an experience I have missed over the past decade.
This year, December again became scholarship season for me as I was invited to serve on the Schwarzman Scholars selection committee. The program, partly modeled on Rhodes, sends many talented university graduates to study at Tsinghua University for a year. Along with other professors, politicians and dignitaries, many of whom held various graduate fellowships, I reviewed the written applications and interviewed a dozen scholars, five of whom, as announced this week, have earned the honor of being forever recognized. Schwarzman scholar. Their lives will be changed forever, and I was inspired to meet them to believe that the future of our nation and the world is bright.

A few days after my participation in Schwarzman’s interview, I met the graduate for breakfast at his request. After studying Chinese and continuing his language studies in college, he is considering becoming a Schwarzman Scholar himself. Bolstered by my recent experience, I was able to give him some tips that I hope will be useful as he prepares for the great experience of his life – competing for and successfully winning a graduate scholarship. His life will change. Perhaps in time he will also help prepare the youngsters for the honor of competing at this level, and perhaps he himself will sit on the selection committee.
The thought makes me quietly happy. Even the thought of Army beating Navy again this Saturday sure makes me happy, but there’s nothing fantastic about it!
