Any North Carolina high school student with at least a 3.0 GPA is eligible to apply for this scholarship opportunity. The first place winner will receive $2,000 and the second place winner will receive $1,000.
Lgbtq Students Head Back To School To Make A Difference
I grew up in a chaotic family of seven and became self-sufficient at a young age. My escape through the chaos was discovered by images flashing on the TV screen. While others explore nature, I am fascinated by the magic of movies. However, one glaring problem gradually became apparent: the lack of representation for people like me. Where are the stories that reflect the diverse cultures and experiences I see in my Charlotte community? This disconnect ignited a fire within me to make a difference through filmmaking. The harsh reality of Hollywood’s limited representation dawned on me when my sister, an aspiring actress, was rudely told by her agent, I am angry that his racial background may limit his opportunities. It was then that I committed to using my talent to amplify voices and stories not represented through film. Over the years I have worked tirelessly to develop my skills creating short films that deal with complex social issues such as racial prejudice. My film “What Makes Us So Different” was recognized by the National Youth Film Festival, which proves my ability to create compelling content. I am now ready to take the next step at the University of Southern California. USC’s top-rated film program gave my vision the perfect launch. Through the new Business of Filmmaking program, I received extensive training from industry experts on the creative and business aspects of filmmaking. The required internships and hands-on opportunities allowed me to gain valuable practical experience. As well as the narrow group where only 55 students worldwide are allowed to join. My unrelenting passion combined with an advanced education will allow me to be a force for positive change in Hollywood. I use my unique experience to create films that show the beautiful diversity of the world so that no child feels invisible. By telling inclusive stories, I want to not only imagine a better future, but also bring it to life on the big screen. This vision is based on the hope that one day we will live in a society that values intelligence and skill over ethnicity. Where harmful stereotypes are no longer part of the stories we see. I thought such a dream was impossible because only 5% of filmmakers are women of color like me. But I refuse to be constrained by force majeure. Because I have immigrant grandparents who were able to come to this country with nothing, not even knowing English, and watching them thrive, having two formally educated parents, and surviving my freshman year of high school growing up, I am confident that my ability to face future challenges. I am encouraged to believe that diverse media representation promotes social change. By presenting diverse perspectives through inclusive storytelling, I hope to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of everyone’s differences. Investing in my education means investing in a more inclusive future where everyone can express themselves through their TV screens.
I’ve been told that the smell of death is something you never forget. It permeates everything it touches and rubs off on your mind and body as it splits you in two; the person you were and the person you are looking for. Likewise, the destruction of a place you once called home, or the persecution of your people, will leave a similar feeling. For me, these are distant possibilities, but for many migrants, refugees and asylum seekers, this is their reality. My father is a man. As refugees from the Liberian civil war, he and his mother came to America with no means of support apart from each other. My father overcame many challenges to become what he is today: a loving father, a graduate, and a pillar of his community. My mother shared a similar story when she left her home in Kenya for a better life in the United States. She and my father raised me with the values they wanted most in the world: kindness, honesty, and boundless generosity. As a first-generation American born to strong and committed parents who overcame many obstacles to get to where they are today, my heart goes out to those caught up in humanitarian crises beyond their control. I dream of devoting my education and career to serving them by advocating for world peace, sustainable practices and the development of poor countries through the United Nations, where I will also win as a leader of the international community. The first step on this path is my undergraduate degree, where I am committed to academic excellence as I pursue a degree in international relations with a focus on peace, conflict, and cultural identity studies. A college education is more than an opportunity to learn. this is an important time for growth, achievement, exploration and connection. To capitalize on this, I will continue to seek opportunities in my community for research, exploration, and leadership to demonstrate what it means to be a global citizen. In addition, I plan to obtain a law degree specializing in international law because of the close relationship between this field and international relations. Then I will work to fulfill my dream of winning a seat at the United Nations and promoting peace and prosperity for all. As I begin a career at the United Nations, I can shape the future of the international community by promoting the rights of citizens and sovereign nations and contributing to the development of poor countries. In addition to working with the United Nations to achieve world peace and continuous self-development to stay true to its mission, I want to positively influence countries’ positions in world affairs. Even now, I see ways that the international community can improve our peace systems to better serve us, and I want to educate myself on how to make those changes happen. Although I am only a person with one voice, I refuse to turn my back on the suffering of others. My parents’ courage and passion for service allowed me to create a stage in my journey to change the world. In the words of the United Nations Charter, we must all contribute to social progress and a better standard of living under greater freedom.

Scholarships For Minority Students
The winner will be publicly announced on July 15, 2024. We may contact finalists with additional questions about their application prior to the announcement date. We will work with donors to review all applications against grant criteria. Winners will be selected based on the size of their application.
Award checks will be sent to the financial aid office of the winner’s academic institution or prospective academic institution in their name to be applied to their tuition and in the name of their institution (subject to school requirements). If the prize is for non-tuition educational expenses, we will work directly with the winner to distribute the prize and ensure that it goes toward the appropriate expenses.
Before the scholarship is awarded, the winner must confirm their academic admission status. Depending on the circumstances, verification of student ID and/or recent transcript may be required.

The Charlotte Pride Scholarship & Internship Program, generously supported by the Principal® Foundation, aims to improve the economic mobility of LGBTQ and allied students from the Charlotte metro area by funding scholarships and summer internships. Recipients are eligible to receive up to $10,000 for the 2024-2025 academic year at an accredited two- or four-year college.
