We strive to not only attract the brightest minds in engineering, but also to help develop them into revolutionary engineers and influential leaders.
Since its founding in 1994, WIE has been a driving force in creating a supportive environment in which every student, regardless of gender, can succeed. Our initiatives have led Georgia Tech to become the number one institution for women engineers in the United States, producing more female engineering graduates than any other institution in the United States since 2009.

WIE’s commitment to increasing the presence of women in engineering is unwavering. We provide the resources, support, and encouragement women need to explore new paths in engineering and leadership. Our mission is clear: to ensure that every woman with a passion and interest in engineering can achieve her dreams with a strong foundation and full support from a world-class institution.
The Women in Engineering program welcomes more than 200 undergraduate students to experience each engineering discipline, tour campus, and attend reception.
ISyE remains No. 1, civil engineering returns to first place, and every undergraduate program is ranked in the top four in the country.
The WIE Mentor-Mentee Game Night allowed students to build connections and communities outside of their regular academic environment.
Federal Grants And Institutional Scholarships
The event provided an opportunity for female engineering students to interact with employers after a career fair organized by the institute for all specializations.
The information session is designed to welcome first-year College of Engineering students by allowing them to meet each other and network with faculty, campus leaders, and industry professionals. By 2023, a record 14 women will hold administrative leadership positions in the College of Engineering. Seventy years ago this school year, when Barbara Diane Michel and Elizabeth Herndon enrolled at Georgia Tech, they were the only women on campus.
Three decades later, there were more women in engineering departments, but almost none were teaching in the department.

And just 25 years ago, the few women who entered Georgia Tech’s engineering faculty found themselves without many others to work alongside.
But in 2023, the ranking of universities has changed. This year, 14 women hold important leadership positions leading the Faculty of Engineering and its eight schools and departments. Their work spans research, entrepreneurship, faculty development and more. These are deputy chairmen and deputy deans. And for the first time in the university’s history, the engineering school is headed by two women.
Student enrollment has also come a long way since Michel and Herndon broke barriers in 1952. Georgia Tech leads the nation in graduating the most female engineers each year. The university also boasts the largest number of female engineering students in the country, with 5,862. This academic year, female enrollment at the university exceeded 32% (compared to the national average of 19%). And in three disciplines – biomedicine, ecology, chemical and biomolecular engineering – women outperform men academically.
Of course, women make up only a third of all engineering students and about one in five faculty members. So, despite significant progress, work continues.
Troubling Gaps In Hope Point To Need-based Aid Solutions
“There has been a real change in engineering,” said Krista Walton, the university’s associate dean for research and innovation. “Working with the system takes a lot of time. Many of us started working at Georgia Tech a decade or two ago. for these roles. It looks like we’ve finally reached a tipping point. I think it’s quite interesting and I hope it continues because the development process is better now than it was 20 years ago.

Panich is the newest member of the college’s leadership team, arriving at Georgia Tech in July 2022 to lead the college’s unique biomedical engineering collaboration with Emory University.
A renowned innovator and researcher, Panitcheva holds 30 US patents and has founded several startups based on her scientific work. His lab focuses on changing the way cells work to try to influence the healing of healthy tissue, not by affecting the cells themselves, but by developing drugs and biomolecules that target diseased tissue and change the environment around the cells.

Panich is also no stranger to the demands placed on administrative positions. She was Vice Chancellor for Faculty Affairs at Purdue University, Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and Executive Assistant Dean of the School of Engineering at the University of California, Davis. She said expanding opportunities for women begins even before they join the Georgia Tech community.
“We must continue to be intentional about ensuring that our applicant pool is diverse and includes many female applicants, that we take diversity in applications seriously, and that we allow women to participate in the final process. We need to do this at the student level, at the doctoral level, at the faculty level and at the administration level.”
Kim Curtis is a natural builder—he is a leading civil engineering expert in the design of greener concrete and concrete. But Kurtis tries even harder to educate people.
As the College of Engineering’s associate dean for advancement and scholarship, Curtis focuses on ways to support, promote and honor his peers and future engineers. She was a tireless and innovative pioneer who helped create and expand teacher support programs.

On behalf of the college, Curtis is leading two national initiatives to create a more diverse utility network. The NextProf Nexus program is a mentoring workshop that produces top-level Ph.D. candidates, postdocs, and early-career scientists and researchers equipped with the tools needed to succeed in academia. The Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship Program offers postdoctoral fellows mentorship, professional development, and academic opportunities to support their research and transition to teaching careers.
“I have always been a person who finds satisfaction in supporting the growth of others. I love finding out what people are passionate about and then finding ways to support and celebrate their success. For example, last year the College created eight new awards. which recognize the outstanding achievements of academic and research faculty in the fields of education, research and entrepreneurship.
“There are so many opportunities here at Georgia Tech. This is a great place to grow and take on new challenges. One of my goals is to attract future leaders to technology and then provide them with the resources they need to succeed. Sometimes this means that I will have to get creative with my ideas and views. But that’s not a problem. When you’re looking for material that’s 5,000 years old, you have to be creative.”
In addition to his leadership role at ChBE, Grover is an ADVANCE faculty member. The institution-wide program builds and maintains a faculty network that supports community and the advancement of women and people from backgrounds underrepresented in academia. ADVANCE faculty advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion and advise campus leadership on policy and structure issues.

It was a position she wasn’t sure she wanted because of the risk of retaliation. When asked to join research teams to submit proposals, Grover said women are often invited late in the process. Often, the positions he offers focus on outreach rather than actual research experience. However, he has seen a shift in awareness at Georgia Tech as it works on solutions to improve opportunity for everyone.
“Georgia Tech leadership, including President, Provost and Dean [Rahim] Bey, has been extremely open to feedback and suggestions. There is greater understanding of the challenges faced by women in higher education. At the same time, we must continue to encourage women to prepare and apply for leadership positions, so we need to make sure more of our teachers believe this is possible.”
Stingelin became the school’s president in the summer of 2022. But he’s not a new face on campus. He joined the Georgia Tech faculty in 2016 and has developed a respected research program in polymer physics, functional materials, and organic and photonic electronics. Her influence extends internationally: she holds the title of International Chair of the University of Bordeaux Initiative for Excellence and a position at Imperial College London. He is a member of the National Academy of Inventors.
Stingelin credits her college mentors, who returned to her graduate research project, for pushing her toward a successful career and leadership. All were men who strongly supported the inclusion of more women in materials science. Stingelin said it wasn’t until she came to Georgia Tech that she was able to become a mentor to women at her institution.
