If you ask Shimin Chen why she won a scholarship from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, a prestigious award given to high-achieving seniors with financial need, she shrugs and says she’s not sure. “I loved being there; I couldn’t work,” said Chen (CAS’24), who grew up in Brooklyn and spent most of her high school years in Sterling, Washington. But now, the coronavirus has limited his outdoor options. “I think the win helped me prove my efforts, and showed my gratitude to my parents for the efforts I made,” he said. “Now they can be sure that we don’t need more funding and can focus on other issues.”
In addition to being a first-generation student, Chen’s presence on campus is interesting for another reason, said Susan Kennedy, dean of undergraduate affairs. “Kola fellows are outstanding students who are selected through a rigorous competitive process,” he said. “We are truly excited to welcome ShiMin, who brings her energy, academic ability and leadership spirit to the community.”
