I came to the US just in time to start kindergarten. My childhood memories of art are meant to create joy and share with my innocent family. At the time, I didn’t realize that my parents’ support in drawing came from the joy of being in a place that encouraged creativity. Apparently the school system in Ecuador is different. Growing up, I learned that not everyone is given the freedom to express themselves and why my parents’ efforts to contribute to this new environment was important. I began to understand that the role of art is to broaden our view of the past and appreciate its role in reflecting society and paving the way for social change. Since then, I have been fascinated by the ability to create, challenge, and transform society. To contribute to the ongoing development effort, I run graduate arts management and policy programs. As an undergraduate student, my class: Art History: Methods and Research introduced me to the art system’s ability to bridge gaps and promote inclusion. This led me to an opportunity to become a gallery assistant at the Fine Arts Center Gallery from university. Its art exhibitions and cultural events feature students and local artists, serving as a platform to showcase the work of underrepresented groups and encourage discussion of social issues. It gave me experience in planning, promotion and management. Learning about the complex workings of the art industry in different cultural contexts showed me the impact of thought systems on society. However, during an internship at Davis Square Park, a local non-profit, I became committed to the cause. Working with people who are passionate about bringing the arts to the underserved, I’ve seen how well-designed programs and initiatives can empower people from all walks of life, empower them to express themselves and engage in cross-cultural dialogue. This experience confirmed my belief in the transformative power of the arts and strengthened my decision to pursue a career in arts management. Pursuing my Masters in Arts Administration at the Art Institute of Chicago, I am interested in advocacy and social justice in the art world. Growing up in this Chicago area from the age of five, I saw its inequity, as well as the disparity of resources that limited representation and opportunity in various neighborhoods in Chicago. My goal is to help the underprivileged community, their creativity helped me. The program’s emphasis on interdisciplinary education and its close ties to the arts community align with my desire to collaborate with artists, organizations, and policymakers to shape the future of society. Looking to the future, using my leadership position in the arts system, I will help create opportunities for underserved communities and create spaces for young children and artists to learn more about the arts. My journey into arts management and politics has been driven by a strong belief in the power of art to inspire, connect and renew communities. I am excited to be in this field and continue to learn and grow. Pursuing a graduate degree at SAIC will give me the knowledge and experience to become a leader who can make a positive impact.
My love for art and storytelling has always led me to create illustrations that reflect the rich history of a people’s culture and society. Growing up as a Native Latina woman, I saw the power of stories to preserve cultural heritage, but I also saw the barriers that hinder artistic opportunities for communities with limited resources. This experience inspires my mission to give back to youth, using my knowledge of art and anthropology to promote pride and cultural understanding. My family has many problems including financial problems. Both of my parents were incarcerated when I was in high school and college, forcing me to put my education on hold while my family tried to make ends meet. During this time we all wanted to help each other. Although I wanted to go to art school, I learned that it was impossible. However, starting community college allowed me to rebuild my confidence and get a more affordable art education. I believe that art is important for everyone, especially those who struggle. Art provides an opportunity for self-expression, respect for history, and an opportunity to see an infinite future. I work with children on this topic in easy sentences. I plan to give back to underserved communities by creating art that tells the stories of different cultures and empowering young people to express themselves in those stories. One of my long-term goals is to create a children’s book or comic that showcases the diversity of our world and introduces cultural references to young people. By focusing on underrepresented voices, I hope to inspire children with disabilities to be proud of their heritage. In addition to creating functional art, I also want to preserve cultural heritage through archives and education. I want to be a journalist, to preserve and share the history of different peoples. In this role, I hope to instill in young people a sense of the importance of their history and a sense of pride and purpose. My educational journey, which includes plans to study arts and humanities at the University of Arizona, will provide me with the knowledge and skills to pursue these dreams. I am committed to giving back to underserved communities by creating ways for young people to access the arts and connect their cultural stories. However, achieving these goals comes with financial challenges. Although I am grateful for the financial aid that covers my education, I am faced with high demands for school supplies and living expenses. As a tutor, I enjoy helping students, but my income is seasonal and unpredictable. In addition, I help my sister with a small mortgage. While I rely on food stamps and Medicare, I continue to struggle to make ends meet while focusing on education. The additional financial support will allow me to focus on my studies and future plans without having to constantly worry about living expenses. This grant will help me to save money for future educational purposes to ensure my artistic career is on track. By reducing this financial burden, I will be able to focus on communities with limited resources through my art and humanitarian work. This scholarship will help me fulfill my goal of using the arts to inspire and uplift young people, connect them with their heritage and unlock their potential. Through my work, I hope to break down barriers that limit access to the arts and provide leadership to young people from abroad.
