Doctors sit on their beds while they train family members and encourage their patients. They see loved ones touching personal items to create a sense of home from home. And, he watched nurses empathize with patients as they recovered from surgery in Wieland’s nursing home. 15 years later, I remember clearly when he encouraged me to start nursing. When I was young I was in a bad way – taking drugs and struggling with severe depression. My parents, confused and in pain, sought the help of a pediatrician. Although she is worried, she doesn’t know how to help me. If her kindness had been enough, I would have lived in peace after this visit. That’s not how my story went. My battle with drug addiction and long-term recovery gave me purpose in life. My recovery encourages me to find beauty, growth, and forgiveness. While I have no credit for these pediatricians, I have to admit how uncomfortable the process makes me and many others. I believe that professional early intervention is necessary and effective in preventing or treating substance use disorders. I recently graduated to become a Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner and am now starting a graduate certificate program to obtain additional certification as a Clinical Psychologist. My goal is to change the way we treat mental health. Our current system views mental health and physical health as two separate entities, although they are undoubtedly related to each other. I dream of working in the first child care office that allows long windows to care for both. With certifications such as PNP and PMHNP, I can provide holistic care to my patients, addressing their physical and mental health needs simultaneously. Child mental health care lists are often long, leaving children, young people and their families feeling helpless as they wait for professional services. My dual certification allows me to provide integrated mental and physical health services in a primary care office setting. By combining these services into one visit, I can not only improve access, but also reduce the stigma associated with mental health care as standard primary care. By applying the knowledge I gained from nursing education to my recovery, I feel I have an important service – I am ready to help a lot with the different challenges that our young people are facing. My past experiences with the failings of our health care system and helping others and advocating for better access to quality mental health services led me to a career in nursing. Nursing is more than just medical care. This includes medical help, health guidance, but compassion. Having the unique opportunity to walk through pain with my patients—highs and lows, challenges and recoveries, tragedies and miracles—inspires me. When my patients are struggling, I hope to bring a candle to their darkness. I want to celebrate with my patients as they grow. It was this genuine, human, compassionate connection that drew me to nursing. My main goal is to guide children and young people to physical and mental health, and one day I hope to see a patient who reminds me of myself. I see another, full potential. I see his light fading. I know despair, fear, and heartlessness because I saw it in the mirror long ago. When these young people ask for help, I am available.
My brother was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin’s lymphoma when I was less than 5 years old. As a child, I spent many days in the Loma Linda cancer unit. I was a child with a fear of everything, and watching my cousin interact with so many machines was no different. I was scared. I remember when I visited him, the nurses brought pictures of my brother in a mask and gown to scare me. Even today, my family talks a lot about these nurses. My brother used to be angry and remove everyone because it was unfair to leave, but the nurses never stopped being kind. They understood where his anger was coming from and tried to ease his spirits. His ideas and help are still an inspiration to me today. These nurses have seen my brother and family through their darkest moments. This is what is important about nurses, they interact with the patient in the absence of doctors and other members of the team. When I was in school, I learned that this is a privilege that nurses have. Nurses are often referred to as doing “whip work”; Something that no one wants to do, and I see it being talked about all the time
